The Prevalence of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia in Self-Referral Populations over Age 50

Abstract
Between March 20th and April 30th, 1995, 634 men in self-referral populations were investigated to find out prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The men who have medical history of BPH or prostatic cancer were not included. We also
excluded
the man who has disease that severely affects voiding dysfunction such as neuropathic bladder, diabetic cystopathy and urethral stricture. The screeing tests included urinary symptom questionnaire (AUA symptom score), digital rectal examination
(DRE0,
prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and abdominal ultrasonography. The men with DRE-positive and/or high age-specific PSA were invited to undergo transrectal ultrasonography(TRUS) and prostate needle biopsy through a personal letter. Although the
prevalence
is artificially elevated because of self-referral poulations, 196 of the 634 men need to be informed about therapeutic intervention (surgical and nonsurgical). Therefore the prevalence of clinical BPH over age 50 is about 31%.
